9 Trucks That Get Over 30 MPG (With Pictures)

Trucks are not exactly known for their fuel efficiency, but some smaller/lighter trucks get surprisingly good mpg.

1. Ram 1500

The Ram 1500 checks all boxes. It’s powerful, looks good, and has solid towing credentials. Also, lots of people rave about how smooth it is to drive.

The Ram 1500 comes with multiple drivetrain options.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the lighter 2WD Ram 1500 manages to get 23mpg in the city, and an impressive 33mpg on the highway. 

This includes a turbodiesel V6 engine that produces 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, enabling a maximum tow capacity of 7,730 lbs and a payload of 2,090 lbs.

2. GMC Sierra 1500 

The GMC Sierra 1500 is a class-leading truck. It boasts a powerful engine, a roomy and quiet cabin, and smooth handling. It also manages to add fuel efficiency to its list of great features. 

The Sierra 1500 comes with multiple drivetrain options.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the lighter 2WD Sierra 1500 gets 23 mpg in the city, and an impressive 30 mpg on the highway. 

This includes a turbodiesel V6 engine that produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, enabling a maximum  Sierra’s competitive towing capacity of 9,300 lbs and a payload of 2,250 lbs.

3. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 

The Chevy Silverado is a sibling of GMC Sierra. These two trucks share lots of components, including the engine lineup. So, it’s no surprise that they also have similar fuel economy ratings.

The Sierra 1500 comes with several powertrain options.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the lighter 2WD Silverado gets 23 mpg in the city, and an outstanding 33 mpg on the highway. 

This includes a turbodiesel V6 engine that produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, enabling its tow capacity of 9,000 – 9,500 lbs and a maximum payload of 2,280 lbs.

According to RepairPal, the Chevy Silverado has a reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0.

4. Chevrolet Colorado 

The Chevy Colorado is a popular compact pickup that does most things well. Although its interior is dated and so-so, it’s got a lineup of powerful engines, smooth-riding dynamics, and a best-in-class towing capability.

The Chevy Colorado comes with multiple drivetrain options.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the lighter 2WD Colorado manages to get 20 mpg in the city, and an impressive 30 mpg on the highway. 

This includes a turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that cranks out 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, enabling the Colorado’s best-in-class towing capacity of 7,700 lbs and a payload of 1,511 lbs.

According to RepairPal, the Chevy Colorado has a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0.

5. GMC Canyon

GM used similar components in the GMC Canyon and the Chevy Colorado. As such, both cars have comparable capabilities.

The Canyon comes with multiple drivetrain options.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the lighter 2WD Canyon gets 20 mpg in the city, and an impressive 30 mpg on the highway. 

This includes a turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that belts out 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, enabling its maximum tow capacity of 7,700 lbs and a maximum payload of 1,605 lbs.

According to RepairPal, the GMC Canyon has a reliability rating of 4.0 out of 5.0.

6. Ford Maverick Hybrid

The Ford Maverick is an all-new pickup truck that debuted in 2022. And it’s already gaining popularity, thanks to its punchy engine, lovable driving dynamics, stylish cabin, low starting price, and, most of all, its outstanding fuel efficiency.

The official EPA estimates for the Maverick aren’t available yet, but Ford estimates that it gets 40/33 mpg (city/highway). That’s almost as good as some compact cars!

This market-leading gas mileage comes from a four-cylinder hybrid engine that makes 191 hp and 155 lb-ft.

The Ford Maverick has a relatively low towing capacity of 2,000 lbs and maximum payload capacity of 1,605 lbs. 

7. Hyundai Santa Cruz

The Hyundai is another all-new truck that launched in 2022. And the pickup is alluring, thanks to its elegant exterior, high-end exterior, city-sized exterior dimensions, balanced handling, and excellent gas mileage.

The CanSyon comes with multiple powertrain options.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the Santa Cruz has EPA ratings of 21 mpg in the city, and an modest 27 mpg on the highway. However, Car and Driver reported this truck got 30MPG in a real-world test. 

The fuel-effcient Santa Crux is powered by a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that belts out 191 hp, enabling  the Santa Cruz’s mediocre towing capacity of 3,500 lbs and a maximum payload of 1,521 – 1,753  lbs.

8. Rivian R1T

The Rivian R1T was the first-ever all-electric pickup truck. And that’s about fuel-efficient as it gets! 

This high-tech truck debuted in 2022. It boasts a sexy exterior, high-end interior, terrific power rating, sports-carlike acceleration, excellent off-roading ability, smooth handling, and a comfy ride. 

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the Rivian R1T gets an EPA rating of 74 in the city and 66 mpg on the highway, making it one of the least fuel-efficient EVs. Still, its fuel efficiency rating leaves rival ICE and hybrid pickups in the dust.

The R1T is equipped with an electric AWD system that generates 835 hp and 908 lb-ft of torque, enabling the truck’s massive towing capacity of up to 11,000 pounds and a modest maximum payload of 1,760 lbs.

9. F-150 Lightning

The F-150 has been the most popular, best-selling vehicle in the US for 40 years straight. And in 2022, Ford brought to market the EV model of this highly successful truck—they called it the F-150 Lightning.

According to FuelEconomy.gov The F-150 Lightning gets an EPA rating of 76 mpg in the city and 61 mpg  on the highway. And the top trim of this EV generates about 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque, enabling the truck’s massive towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. 

The F-150 was the second all-electric pick to come to market. And the base F-150 Lightning is surprisingly low priced, unlike its direct competition—the Rivan R1T.
