Why Are Toyota Car Seats So Uncomfortable? (& How To Fix)

Despite the popularity of Toyota, many customers find that their seats are uncomfortable.

So, why are Toyota car seats so uncomfortable?

Toyota car seats are uncomfortable because they are primarily designed to guarantee safety rather than passenger comfort. Keeping manufacturing costs low is also a key reason why Toyota car seats are not as luxurious as you might hope.

Continue reading to discover which Toyotas have the most uncomfortable seats, and the best ways to make your Toyota car seats more comfortable.

Why Do Toyota Cars Have Uncomfortable Seats?

Let’s take a look at some of the key reasons why people find Toyota car seats uncomfortable.

1. Safety

The Department of Transportation demands that all car seats must conform to certain safety requirements.

This entails limiting the distance between the back and the headrest of the seat to prevent severe injuries in case of rear-end collisions.

As a result, the seat will become safe but hard and uncomfortable.

Toyota has complied with this requirement hence most Toyota models have high safety scores but poor comfort ratings.

2. Cost Savings

Many people consider Toyotas as budget cars. For Toyota to maintain its low-price offerings and maximize its profits, they have to use cheaper materials when designing its seats.

3. Space

There’s not a lot of space to work inside a car.

Most modern cars now use a bucket seat (similar to the ones used in racing cars) that uses less space and provides more side support.

However, what bucket seats give in terms of space savings, they take away in terms of comfort.

How To Fix Uncomfortable Toyota Car Seats?

Toyota cars are very popular with drivers due to their high safety ratings.

Many people choose to overlook the few shortcomings of these vehicles, thanks to the impressive safety features.

The good news is that you do not have to contend with an uncomfortable car all your life.

Here, we share tips on how to fix uncomfortable Toyota car seats:

1. Use The Correct Steering Wheel Position

The position of the steering wheel determines your body posture while driving.

As you probably know, your posture is crucial to your overall comfort.

Considering this, you should start by adjusting the steering wheel to make it more accessible and easy to reach.

If the steering is in the correct position, you do not have to move from your comfort zone.

You can remain in your most comfortable position while driving without straining your neck and back.

2. The Correct Seat Position

In many cases, the position of the seat could be the reason why you are uncomfortable.

The good news is that most car seats are adjustable.

Every vehicle has a lever that you can use to adjust the front seats and sometimes, the rear seats as well.

You can adjust the driver’s seat to move forward or backward, upward or downward, to fit your height and body size.

You can also change the position of the headrest and adjust the back to provide the comfort and support that you need.

To adjust the car seat back, position your body at the center, and push the level until your back is as straight up as possible.

Your body should be parallel to the steering while your knees should bend slightly in a comfortable position.

3. Add Memory Foam Seat Cushions

One of the easiest and most effective ways of making your car seats comfortable is to buy extra cushions.

You may purchase additional seat cushions to make your ride as comfortable as possible.

Better yet, memory foam seat cushions do not cost much, and they do not require professional installation.

Besides, some car seat cushions come with heating/ventilation capabilities to keep you warm or cool depending on the weather.

4. Add Lumbar Support

Uncomfortable car seats can put a lot of strain on your spine and back.

This can get worse if the seats do not come with lumbar support.

Fortunately, you can reduce the strain by adding lumbar support cushions to your car seats.

These cushions are designed to protect your lower back by ensuring you are sitting straight up without a curve.

Make sure you test the lumbar cushions to affirm that they are the right ones for your needs.

5. Add Neck Support

If you experience neck pain after a long drive, then it’s high time you purchase neck support pillows for your car.

Similar to lumbar support, neck support is equally important.

These pillows provide support for your head, neck, and shoulders, ensuring you remain as comfortable as possible throughout your drive.

However, you might need to adjust the headrest as well for maximum comfort and support.

3. Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is popular thanks to its excellent gas mileage and comfortable ride. It’s also surprisingly quick, too

The 2020 Toyota Camry also deserves accolades for its significant seat improvements.

Previous versions like the Camry XSE and the SE are extremely uncomfortable. The 2020 model features fabric-trimmed seats with layered wood trim for maximum comfort.

Certain trim levels like the XLE V6 come with ventilated and heated seats. You can also change the seat setting depending on the weather conditions.

4. Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna has remained a popular model thanks to its comfortability.

What makes the 2021 Toyota Sienna different is that you can adjust the seat to fit your height for enhanced comfort.

Other highlights of this model are the heated and ventilated front seat options and the comfortable second-row captain’s chairs.

5. Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 does not require any introductions. It’s popular thanks to its incredible reliability, slow depreciation rate, and family-friendly versatility.

Let’s take a look at which Toyotas have the least comfortable seats.

1. Toyota Yaris MK2

The Toyota Yaris is a decent choice for those who love small cars.

The Yaris MK2 has some of the most uncomfortable seats you will ever find in a Toyota.

2. Toyota Auris

The Toyota Auris is easy to drive, and it has very low running costs.

The fact that it has plenty of space makes it a practical family car. However, the Auris is one of the least comfortable cars you can drive.

The seats have an awkward design that increases the likelihood of developing shoulder and neck pain.

3. Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla is undeniably one of the most famous car models out there.

  1. I’m sorry, but when I pay $55k for a SUV, I expect it to have comfortable seats. I bought a 2022 Highlander Hybrid Limited Edition in May and it has the most uncomfortable driver’s seat I have ever sat in. It kills my low back! The seat is hard under the sits bones, doesn’t tilt up high enough in front to support the thighs, the lumbar support hits me at the bottom of my rib cage (I’m 6’1″, so it’s not because I’m short) so doesn’t support the lumbar area, and the little bump at the back of the seat tilts my pelvis too far forward. The dealer didn’t have any in stock, so I wasn’t able to sit in one before ordering it in March. However, my sister has a 2019 Highlander that I drove halfway across the country last year when helping her move and I had no such problems. I loved that ride and that’s when I decided to buy one. I don’t know what has changed with the seats since 2019, but they’re a disaster.

  2. Same with us bought it unseen. Seats are horrible especially for those with hip and back pain. So sorry we purchased

  3. Seats are horrible in the 22 highlander. And the leather does not fit tight on mine. Company can’t even fix them under warranty because they don’t know how. So now my seats are not only hard but uncomfortable. I love the look of the car but now I have uncomfortable saggy leather seats. Seats in a car should be safe, well made and comfortable especially in this price range.

  4. Uncomfortable seats are a deal breaker. I plan of driving my vehicle and being comfortable doing it. Wake up toyota. Was looking at rav 4 but warned off by friends who have bought.
